INTERVIEW
The influence of Tecktonik on the Junior market
Interview with Francois Lavaux, Promostyl’s head of HPP
- Music has always had an impact on the attitudes and fashion of the Junior market. What is the current trend?
Adolescents are the No. 1 consumers in the music industry. Music is not only a source of fun for them, but the artists are a huge influence on their style. This is where they find the elements which give the “it” factor to their wardrobe.
Right now the big trend among adolescents is Tecktonik. The music is a blend of Belgian techno with “Hardstyle” and the dance moves are inspired from electro and hip-hop. Tecktonik first broke into the mainstream in 2006, due in part to the popularity of the dance and dress style.
- What is the Tecktonik look?
The Tecktonik look is a mix of 80s techno-acid looks, slim-cut rocker jeans and cyber-punk hairstyles.
This style first made an appearance in more elitist circles with the emergence of Electroclash and collections from designers such as Jeremy Scott.
This style has been further popularized by the recent collections at H&M, the internet (mainly Youtube) and a growing buzz about Tecktonik.
Although the Tecktonik look of today may not seem as original as the Techno scene of the 90s, it mixes up a variety of influences from the past 25 years. It is quite symbolic of the mash-up or remix era of the 2000s.
- How will this trend evolve?
Tecktonik has been inspired by a slim rocker look mixed with a 80s electro fluo look, as found in the H&M collections. Also following the success of the “Tecktonik Killer” parties, a clothing line was launched featuring an eagle logo with a Germanic-styled star.
But for this trend to last longer, the Tecktonik will have to evolve… ever-sexier and flashier!
In the December issue of HPP
Youth, we will feature a theme called “Teck-Ethnik”. This theme proposes ethnic elements on Tecktonik styles as seen at the last Who’s Next!
A definite must-see is “Jey Jey” on Youtube. He has become a star in his own right, from the first videos filmed in his garage and bedroom to videos of dance contests he has won.
