Sahar Famouri exhibited her creations for the first time at the Esprit Meuble trade show in Paris in December. Asked about her creative process, she said with pleasure “my philosophy is based on the belief that creation must be a lasting part of our life, making our life more agreeable, surprising and innovative. I want CRYSTAL to surprise people, to gather them together, and above all to adapt to everyone as people can choose in which way they want to use it.”

Chanel’s thirteenth Métiers d’Art show was held on December 6 in Paris’ Ritz hotel; a building that has been no stranger to the world of fashion and luxury since this is where Gabrielle Chanel lived from 1937 until her death in 1971. The infamous fashion brand therefore went back to its roots this year, having previously held the show at venues in cities like Tokyo, Monte Carlo, Edinburgh and New York, amongst others. The Métiers d’Art is unique in the way that it always take place outside of the annual fashion calendar, its aim is to pay tribute to Chanel’s workshops and honour its artisan partners that create the label’s fine, high quality clothes.
A new trend is working on including fantasy and games in the design world. While young designer Muhammad Sahrum was doing his end of studies project at the University of Greenwich in London, he invented a 21st century embassy. “The Inverted Fortress, an Open Embassy” presents itself as a large play area, with flexible workspaces and sport rooms to make making serious decisions a bit easier.
From Karl Lagerfeld’s beloved Choupette to Charlotte Olympia’s cat-face slippers, our feline friends have always been prevalent in the fashion world. The clothing label Superweet x moumi even goes as far as to say that its designs have been completely inspired by cats. Designer Choltida Pekanan is the proud owner of Moumi, the famous cat who gave her the idea to launch the brand back in 2011. Her first collection consisted of simple t-shirts with cat-shaped prints of Moumi all over them, which immediately became a hit with cat lovers and owners alike. The brand has since evolved and now has seven different collections to its name, the latest being the AW 16-17 collection entitled “Fame”.
Sara Andreasson is the new voice of committed feminism. This 27 year-old Swedish illustrator offers her vision of the world in a deliberately fun and colourful style that attracts people’s attention to important subjects. Her vision of women breaks the rules. Bodies are sculptural and come from all backgrounds. For example, armpits are not shaved to suggest an assumed femininity, and girl gangs eat junk food, smoke and chill in causal clothes.
Changing our point of view, dreaming, daring, laughing, this Autumn-Winter 2018-19 season’s influences ask us to get involved and to develop new ways of living. Connected designs, nomadic environments, materials made out of recycled waste, totem and player-like shapes, or the purity of essential lines, all contribute to an ACTIVIST season that is devoted to energy, imagination and dreams!
