FLEMISH DESIGNERS CONTINUE TO MAKE HEADLINES IN FASHION
In its Summer 09 Influences Trendbook published in June 2007, Promostyl stated "a desire to magnify the everyday, to play with perfection and to revisit the classical codes of the 17th century Flemish masters". Dutch photographer Désirée Dolron's work reinterprets Dutch masters' portraits through photography, playing with light and dark.
The new designer as of Winter 08-09 at Dior Mens, Kris Van Assche, has taken inspiration from this photographer's portraits to create a collection of radical elegance in a colour range of almost-blacks. Even the catwalk was lit in ciaro-oscuro.
Lanvin's Mens designer Lucas Ossendrijver, has also taken inspiration from Flemish portraitists with his colour range of subtle greys, navy-blues and black.
Meanwhile, John Galliano appeared at the end of his Dior Summer 08 Haute Couture show dressed in grunge Rembrandt!
A photograph by Désirée Dolron even appeared on the New Year greetings cards of a bank. There has always been a strong link between the Finance and Fashion worlds, not just in terms of investment, but also in trend analysis.
This remastering of Flemish design is bringing new food-for-thought to fashion.
