Fabrics with an exceptional aesthetic

Wanbing Huang’s story is rooted in Guangzhou, a coastal city in Southern China not far from Hong Kong. As a teenager, she specialised in fashion design techniques and graduated from Tokyo’s prestigious Bunka university at the age of just 20. However, the future designer didn’t want to leave it at that. She headed for Central Saint Martins in London, where she followed the BA Fashion programme reserved for talented young people specialising in women’s ready-to-wear.

This training would not only open the doors of Issey Miyake and Céline to her, but also those of entrepreneurship, as Wanbing Huang created her eponymous label during Shanghai Fashion Week in 2016.

Her main source of inspiration? Her native city, whose maritime surroundings and reflections have inspired her to create singular fabrics with striking underwater effects. But that’s not all. Viewing fashion design as a form of storytelling, Wanbing uses specific textiles to express her opinions on social questions and personal feelings, while simultaneously enhancing the beauty of a woman’s body.

Collections with metaphysical inspirations

In this respect, her first collection “Chaotic Order”, presented for spring/summer 2017, was strongly influenced by the short film by the Belgian director Oliver Smolders “Seuls”. Among other things, it features 3D embroidery, artisanal weaving techniques and captivating lacing that is supposed to embody the emotional upheaval of an autistic child.

On the contrary, her autumn/winter 2017 collection “Beyond the Body” was presented as a study on life and death, a tribute to her late grandmother.

In her latest spring/summer 2018 collection, “Memory Shards”, Wanbing explores the relationship between light and the ocean. “I took inspiration from my very first memory of the world, the light,” explains the designer on her website.

An inspired and inspiring view of fashion that has even won over the kit supplier Nike. Having become an expert in textile innovation, the Wanbing Huang studio was invited to collaborate on the highly anticipated launch of the new Vapormax sneaker design at the beginning of 2018. This opportunity led to her designs being exhibited at Art Basel Hong Kong and earned her international fame. An achievement indeed.
